Abstract

This paper presents the impact of fuel cell and battery performance under motoring and regenerative braking of permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive on benefit of hybridization of electrical sources for electric vehicle system. Due to slow dynamics of FC dominated by a temperature and fuel delivery system, fast load demand will cause a high voltage drop in a short time, which is recognized as a fuel starvation phenomenon. Therefore to employ a FC in electric vehicle application and to improve system performance when load demands high energy during transient time, the electrical system must have at least an auxiliary power source. The possibilities of using a battery as an auxiliary source with an FC main source are presented in this paper. A novel control strategy has been designed for FC battery hybrid power source which enables both active current sharing and power source management control in such hybrid power systems. The effectiveness of the system is verified through simulation using Simulink/ MATLAB.
