Abstract

As the amount of Internet traffic is becoming diverse and dynamic in nature and high speed data has become the necessity, optical network need to be flexible and agile. Currently deployed wavelength division multiplexing based networks have fixed grid and does not include flexibility, elastic optical network (EON) has emerged as a flexible optical network architecture which has numerous advantages including high speed communication, bit rate flexibility, increased network capacity, better energy efficiency, scalability and quality of transmission over wavelength division multiplexed based fixed grid optical network. Recently researchers have perceived that elastic optical network is anemerging technology which has led to a change from rigid and homogenous optical network to flexible and heterogeneous optical network. Modulation formats play a significant role in increasing the flexibility and adaptability of optical network. This letter presents the architecture of elastic optical network and analyses and compares the bit error rate performance of different modulation formats used in elastic optical network.
