Abstract

The performance of an adaptive selective-repeat automatic-repeat-request (SR ARQ) scheme with variable packet size is analysed in a time-varying Rayleigh fading channel. A Gilbert-Elliott model is used for the channel. Therefore, the state of the entire system can be modelled by a Markov chain. Channels with many different types of time behaviour can be modelled by adjusting the parameters of the general model. As the numerical results demonstrate, the time-varying characteristics of the channel have a great influence on the optimal values of the design parameters of the adaptive scheme.
