Abstract

The average frame error rate (FER) and throughput expressions are derived for adaptive modulation combined with transmit/receive diversity schemes in a Rayleigh fading channel. Based on these derived expressions, the effect of transmit/receive diversity on the link performance of adaptive modulation is investigated. Two transmit diversity schemes are considered for analysis: space-time transmit diversity (STTD) and selection transmit diversity (STD). Our results show that the performance of adaptive modulation can be improved by combining STD, especially when there is a few receive antennas. However, STTD gives little benefit on adaptive modulation.
