Abstract

This paper deals with the performance analysis of 10hp induction motor using finite element analysis (FEA) approach. The motor has been tested at different loading conditions at temperature of 75 degree. The loadings under analysis were: the rate load, intermittent loading, and multi-intermittent loading of 50%, 100%, 200%, and 300% of 52.7Nm rated load. It was found that the performance of the motor deteriorates relatively with load increment. Also, when the load of 300% of the rated value was used, the speed decreases far less than the rated value, and the speed could not settle for more than one second. Sensitive parameters like rise time and settling were assessed. This gives a complete guide on induction motor loading procedures, and the right control techniques that would be involved depending on the percentage of rated load involved. This shows that FEA approach is highly suited for performance analysis of the machine under different loading conditions.
