Abstract

Introduction: Syphilis is a systemic bacterial infection, chronic and exclusive to humans. When left untreated, it evolves into stages of varying severity, which may affect various organs and systems of the body. Objectives: To describe the epidemiological profile of syphilis in different regions of the country. Methods: Descriptive, retrospective and documentary cross-sectional epidemiological study of cases registered in the database of the Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System (DATASUS) and of the Department of Chronic Conditions and Sexually Transmitted Infections in the period between 2010 to 2019. Epidemiological indicators were used to compose the analysis of the results. Results: The prevalence of acquired syphilis was shown to be high in Brazil during the years 2010 to 2018 in all regions, with emphasis on the Southeast, North and Northeast regions and with a higher prevalence in males. Conclusion: The need for more effective prophylactic measures to combat dissemination in the community and promote more health promotion and protection actions against this pathology is ratified.
