Abstract
Objective: To analyze the profile of overweight and obesity of nursing staff in intensive care and emergency units.Material and Methods: Cross-sectional study in an emergency hospital, in the areas of intensive care and emergency, with 241 nursing staff. A questionnaire addressing socio demographic and working journey characteristics was applied, as well as anthropometric measurements were verified. Descriptive statistics analysis was used and association was analyzed using chi-square or Fisher tests.Results: Waist circumference proved inadequate in 61.0% of workers, the waist/hip ratio, inadequate in 43.2%. As for body mass index, 68.9% of the workers had inadequate classification, representing, respectively, 37.8% with overweight and 31.1% obesity.Conclusion: There was a high percentage of overweight and obesity (68.9%) in nursing staff investigated. Modification in lifestyle, especially the inclusion of a healthy diet and physical exercise are important and necessary measures for the prevention and control of cardiovascular disease, considering the increasing number of overweight and obesity in our society.
