Abstract

The author describes M-band modulated filter banks having the perfect reconstruction property, called PRMF (perfect reconstruction modulated filter) banks. Detailed fast algorithms for general PRMF banks are presented. Optimal odd PRMF banks are shown to be free from the blocking effect due to the prototype window, with values decaying to zero at the borders, and they are more efficient than DCT (discrete cosine transform) for bit-rate reduction. They also provide much better frequency selectivity than the DCT, which is needed for good hierarchical HDTV (high-definition television)/TV coding schemes, especially with interlaced scannings. >
