Abstract
Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in the Western world. Despite advances in diagnosis and management, mortality remains high. It is also a significant source of human suffering and a leading consumer of healthcare resources. Established risk factors are common in Western society and, with progressing change in demographic structure and an increasing proportion of the population reaching more advanced age, the prevalence for cardiovascular disease will most likely remain high.
