Abstract

Percutaneous nephrostolithotomy is the removal of renal and proximal ureteral calculi via a nephrostomy tube tract placed into the kidney. The procedure is performed most often by a urologist and radiologist working together. Recently this method of stone removal has become preferred over standard pyelolithotomy. The radiologic technologist is an integral part of the "team approach," and as a team member should have an understanding of the procedure and its goals.
