Abstract

Fixation into the ilium has traditionally been performed for scoliosis. The technique has evolved greatly from open highly invasive techniques with elevation of flaps from the pelvis and placement of contoured rods passed between the inner and outer cortices of the ilium, to open techniques involving iliac bolts and transverse connectors.1–3 Indications have expanded to include stabilization in complex pelvic tumors and for complex trauma.4–7 Modern techniques involving entirely percutaneous placement of pelvic instrumentation with subfascial passing of rods into lumbar pedicle screws are the most recent evolution of the technique of fixation to the pelvis.5,8 This article reviews current concepts for minimally invasive percutaneous lumbopelvic fixation and presents illustrative examples .
