Abstract
PARAVALVULAR LEAKS after valve replacement are not uncommon. The incidence of postoperative mitral valve paravalvular regurgitation is reported to be between 2% and 17%.1-3 One percent to 3% of paravalvular leaks require intervention because of clinical symptoms.3 Clinically significant paravalvular leaks are more often associated with mitral prosthetic valves compared with a prosthesis in the aortic position.4 Twenty-five percent of paravalvular leaks are detected within the first postoperative month and 75% within the first postoperative year.
