Abstract
As lossless compression methods offer limited compression of images, significant amount of time for transmission of images to different users can result. In this paper, we have considered the possibility of building a perceptually lossless coder based on the just noticeable distortion (JND) profile with subband discrete cosine transform (SBDCT) to allow for perceptually high quality monochrome images with higher compression ratio as compared to lossless compression. The proposed algorithm is built on the SBDCT which allows fast implementation via software and hardware optimization, and thus achieving efficient coding and compact compression of images. Simulations show that our coder can produce processed images with near to transparent coding and yet remain decodeable with any JPEG decoder based on the ITU-T.81 guidelines at bit rates of 0.3 bpp and above.
