Abstract
This study was conducted to compare perceptions of the female sex role held by married and single college women. Forty-five married and 45 single female students were compared in their perception of self, ideal woman, and man's ideal woman with the Inventory of Female Values. The results indicated that the single group was significantly more family oriented than the married group in perceiving self and ideal woman. No significant differences were found between the two groups in perceiving man's ideal woman. Both married and single college women indicated their belief that most men would desire an ideal woman with a strong intrafamilial orientation. These results were explained in terms of cultural stereotypes enveloping the female sex role in our society.
