Abstract

While urban space planning is often concerned with open space provision and access, measuring the perceived recreation quality of urban space, particularly waterfront, is rarely carried out since users’ perceptions are not directly visible. As a result, space might not suit the users’ needs and requirements. However, knowledge of recreation quality indicators, such as public perception, behavior, experience, and satisfaction at urban waterfronts can provide useful information for sustainable urban open space development. Hence the study aims at analyzing the recreational quality indicators at waterfront environments so as to investigate the significance of these spaces in enhancing the quality of urban life. The methodology is based on comparative analysis of identified five lakefronts in Nagpur through six dimensions of urban design, namely morphological, perceptual, social, visual, functional, and temporal. The analysis incorporates qualitative and quantitative approach through the study of morphological maps, activity mapping, mind mapping, observations, questionnaires, walking interviews and photo documentation. The study concludes that the design of lakefront development should cater to the end users’ needs and expectations and should encourage a variety of activities and events which will help in offering opportunities for recreation and social activities for wider age group and all class of people.
