Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To describe the type of association between perception of quality of life (QL) and quality of diet (QD) in urban and rural diabetic and normoglycemic adults. METHOD: In a cross-sectional, descriptive study 53 diabetic (D) and 189 normoglycemic (ND) rural (R) and urban (U) adults were included. After obtaining their informed consent we determined their (QL), and their (QD). Data were described by frequencies and analyzed by X2 RESULTS: In 270 subjects, 46% of 184 U and 54% of 86 R had at the same time inadequate QL and QD. There were 54% U and 46% R with good quality of life perception and inadequate diet. Adequate diet was present in 31% U and 47% R subjects with inadequate quality of life perception; and 69% U and 53% R with this condition had good quality of life perception. Higher values of inadequate QL were significantly associated with inadequate diet. (X2= 0.187, p< 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: There was a higher proportion of U subjects with a good perception of quality of life and adequate diet in comparison with R subjects. In R as in U subjects, when diet is adequate there is a better perception of quality of life. SOURCE OF RESEARCH SUPPORT: UAEM-CONACyT – TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY
