Abstract

The article presents the results of some empirical studies of perceptions of ownership changes in Poland in 1988 and 1990. A fundamental difference in employee awareness appears in relating ownership to responsibility, financial risk and effective management. The negative outcomes of privatization are: unemployment, loss of social security benefits, and takeover or partial takeover of property by foreign capital. The positive aspects of the changes are: increasing efficiency throughout the economy, the rationalization of management, a relationship between the effects of work and wages, and a reduction in bureaucracy. In conclusion it is noted that the process of ownership change is becoming politicized, and the relationship between privatization and changes in social awareness is emphasized.
