Abstract

Abstract Coradiamond identifies a particular philosophical attitude which she calls the .metaphysical spirit.. A philosopher displays the metaphysical spirit when she sets out philosophical requirements in advance of investigating the topic at hand-requirements which the proper employment of a concept or the proper study of a branch of philosophy must follow. For example, it is in this sense of .metaphysical. that Diamond claims that Wittgenstein’ Tractatus is appropriately described as metaphysical. According to Diamond, what is metaphysical is not the content of the Tractatus (since Wittgenstein insists that the content is nonsense), but rather the belief that a complete logical analysis of our propositions must be possible. It is this requirement of logical analysis, this assumption that a logical analysis of our propositions must be possible, that exhibits .the metaphysical spirit..
