Abstract

ABSTRACTA single-subject, alternating treatment design was used to compare the effects of an aquatic versus land-based activity intervention on the behaviors of participants with memory impairment or dementia. Nineteen intervention days were implemented over a duration of 60 days. Results of this preliminary investigation suggest that there is no difference in participant behavior, mood, or orientation when engaged in land-based versus aquatic based activity. The investigators recommend the use of aquatics for individuals with dementia, especially for those individuals with a history of swimming, owning a pool, or living near a lake.
