Abstract
In this article the main historiographical steps on royal monumental burial of the last twenty five years are retraced. To try to understand the main epistemological aspects of the research on this topic, in the following pages I would like to go back to the mid-twentieth century by expanding the analysis towards the first onset of a new interest in the theme of death, which is inextricably connected with the very idea of tomb, as well as to the funerary sculpture as an autonomous artistic genre. Taking into account the elements of the discussion raised so far, I will examine the French and the German historiography for the undeniable propulsive role of the theories and methods played during the twentieth century and at the beginning of the new millennium.
