Abstract

This article examines Marcantonio Cinuzzi’s Ode spirituali, which according to V. Marchetti were «il migliore prodotto della poesia protestante in Italia» [the finest example of Protestant poetry in Italy]. Alongside the two already known witnesses, there emerges a third codex (Urb. Lat. 758) - anonymous and untitled - that makes it possible to outline the evolution of this interesting collection of heterodox religious poetry from 16th century Italy. The article analyses the various stages of the work, starting with an early version consisting of 68 odes divided into four books that Cinuzzi subsequently altered to a structure of 50 preceded by one introductory ode. In the process, he improved the poetic fabric and deepened the religious spirit of the work, transforming it into a sort of poetic treatise instilled with unsettled religious fervour.
