Abstract

The detailed mechanism of peptide chain initiation in animal cells is not clearly understood. Significantly different models differing in the basic steps and factor requirements for peptide chain initiation in animal cells have been proposed. In this section, we will briefly review our recently proposed model (Gupta, 1987: Gupta et al, 1987 and Roy et al, 1988) and a widely used model proposed several years ago by Staehelin, Anderson, Hershey and their co-workers (Schreier et al, 1977; Jagus et al, 1981; and Benne and Hershey, 1978). We will then present our views regarding the differences between these two models.
