Abstract

Interstitial cystitis (IC) is a sterile bladder condition that occurs primarily in women. It is characterized by intense urinary frequency, urgency, burning, and suprapubic pain.56,61,74 The two most plausible, but not mutually exclusive, theories to explain the pathophysiology of IC are: (a) some defect in the protective glycosaminoglycan (GAG) layer of the bladder mucosa,50 and (b) an increased number of activated bladder mast cells.69 IC patients also suffer from allergies,40 irritable and inflammatory bowel syndrome, and migraines,70 all of which are exacerbated by stress.70,74
