Abstract

This expert perspective scrutinizes our engagement with electronic patient records, a vital instrument for infectious disease specialists in both patient care and the prudent use of anti-infectives. The authors propose the potential for enhancing these tools through user-centered design and system workflow improvements, along with the implementation of best practices gleaned from the scientific management of information systems. Such transformations could be expedited with the coordinated participation of the discipline professionals to assist in articulating needs and conducting evaluations in active partnership with the creators of these technologies. Concluding, the article presents a series of contemplations on possible advancements of new generations of electronic patient record components, particularly beneficial for infectious disease practice. These include tools specifically dedicated to the management of anti-infective treatments, the reporting of microbiological results, the synthesis of infectious disease medical data, vaccination management, epidemic management, and prevention of infectious risk.
