Abstract

Post-herpetic trigeminal neuropathy is a difficult condition to treat. Neuromodulation has been described to be effective in this condition. PENS (peripheral electrical nerve stimulation, Algotech) therapy is an office-based neuromodulatory approach which uses percutaneously placed acupuncture-like needle probes to stimulate peripheral sensory nerves. PENS uses frequency dependent electrical current to modulate the activity of peripheral nerves. It can be used both as a diagnostic tool to identify patients who would benefit from a permanently implanted neurostimulation device, or as a therapeutic treatment, with sustained beneficial effect seen after 3–4 PENS treatment.
