Abstract

In early 1901, an informal committee of the American Chemical Society proposed the establishment of an electrochemical section or division to accommodate the growing interest in electrochemistry. The ACS Council suggested that action on the proposal be delayed, for it was estimated that many in the hybrid field of electrochemistry would be unable to meet the professional qualifications of the ACS. Disappointed in that decision, and convinced that scientists needed a forum specifically dedicated to electrochemistry, a number of enthusiasts pushed forward. In April 1902, a new door was opened, and the American Electrochemical Society (changed to The Electrochemical Society, Inc. in 1930) was formally established.
