Abstract

When Don Bouzek talks about alternate theatre, he refers not to the search for new performance concepts or dramatic styles, but to the need to service a community, a non-ideological mandate to reflect the tastes and problems of a particular place. Often, when one hears these phrases from an artistic director, there is reason for judicious suspicion, for the rhetoric of ‘community’ has a reputation of concealing a lack of critical thought.
