Abstract

Breakfast is the first meal to provide energy for brain function in learning, especially concentration. Approximately 60% of medical students have a low concentration level. This can be caused by skipping breakfast. Research about the effect of breakfast to concentration at college students is still hard to found.This study aimed to assess the effect of breakfast to concentration’s score on medical students in Jenderal Soedirman University. The research method was quasi experimental pre- and post-test without control group design. The subjects consist of 34 medical students’ class of 2011 and 2013, which fulfilled research’s criteria. Breakfast was given as the treatment with 600 kcal (38,2% carbohydrate, 31,31% protein, 13.8% lipid, 16,7% mineral), after the first concentration’s test. The time between pre- and post-treatment was 2 hours. TheArmy Alpha test’s resultsshowedthat concentration’s score increased as much as 10 points. Bivariate analysis showed p score <0.0001 (p <0.05) which means that there’s an effect of breakfast to the concentration’s score which statistically significant on medical students in Jenderal Soedirman University.
