Abstract

Introduction: Exposure smoke leads to increased lipid peroxidation, increased ROS, decreased glutathione levels and activity of endogenous antioxidant enzymes such as glutathione peroxidase (GPx). Tender coconut water contains compounds such as L-arginine, vitamin C, minerals and selenium which can increase endogenous antioxidants. Endogenous antioxidant parameters examined in this study were GPx. This study aims to prove the effect of tender coconut water on endogenous antioxidant levels in wistar strain rats exposed to cigarette smoke. Method: Experimental research with post test only control group design. The independent variable was administration of tender coconut water, while the dependent variable was endogenous antioxidant levels. The study population was wistar strain male rats that were kept in the Penelitian Antar Universitas (PAU) Gajah Mada University, Yogyakarta. Twenty-four male Wistar strain rats used in this study were divided into 4 random groups, namely K1 (fed standard et libitum + aquadest); K2 (given standard feed et libitum + aquadest + exposure to cigarette smoke 3 cigarettes / day); P1 (given standard feed et libitum + aquadest + exposure to cigarette smoke 3 cigarettes / day + vitamin E dose of 1.8 mg / 200 g BW / day); P2 (given standard feed et libitum + aquadest + exposure to cigarette smoke 3 sticks / day + tender coconut water with a dose of 8 ml / 200 grBB / day). The treatment was given for 14 days. On the 15th day, blood was taken for rats to be checked for GPx levels using ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay), data were analyzed by the One Way Anova test. Results: Mean levels of GPx K1: 68.81 ± 5.51 U / mL; K2: 33.96 ± 3.13 U / mL; P1: 61.99 ± 6.21 U / mL and P2: 57.49 ± 4.92 U / mL. The analysis results obtained p: 0.000 (p value <0.05). Conclusion: Administration of tender coconut water is an effect on endogenous antioxidant levels of GPx in wistar strain rats exposed to cigarette smoke.
