Abstract

Objective To evaluate the outcomes and risk factors of penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) for keratopathy following vitreoretinal surgery with silicone oil. Methods A total 14 PKP performed in 12 patients with median duration follow up 8 months (5-17 months) were evalutated retrospectively. Results Silicone oil was removed before or during the time of inital PKP in 10eyes and left in situ in 4 cases.Eight out of 14 grafts survived (57.1%).At final follow up,70%clear graft were found in the eyes which had oil removed before or during the time of PKP.Duration of graft survival in eyes with silicion oil removed was longer than the eyes with silicion oil present (P =0.068).Multiple sugery, hypotony, graft infection and corneal neovascularization were important negative prognostic factors for postoperative clear graft.Endothelium cell density after surgery was 1807.25±370.14/mm2,signifciently decreased than that of preoperative.Postoperative visual acuity (VA) were improved in 9 eyes (75%) and 50% of the eyes reached a VA 0.05 or better. Conclusions PKP is an effective solution for keratopathy following vitreoretinal surgery with silicone oil.Silicone oil removed prior or during the time of PKP can increase success of graft.Multiple sugery, hypotony, graft infection and corneal neovascularization are risk factors for graft failure.
