Abstract

The number of traffic violations in Indonesia has reached at an alarming level, causing more property damage, injuries, and claiming more casualties and lives. In line with the situation, law enforcement on traffic violations have not been yet able to be effectively implemented. Several factors are, arguably, behind this problem, namely: the effectiveness of the law, its enforcement apparatus, road infrastructure conditions, as well as community respons and their culture. Above of these, the writer argues, law enforcement against traffic violations becomes important because a traffic violation has caused various losses, both material and immaterial. Therefore, the writer sees necessity to improve the law by stipulating maximum penalties for traffic violations. In addition to this, a better management to handle traffic problems and violations is further needed so that the new traffic law can be implemented properly. Efforts to significantly curb traffic violations are seen urgent as preventive and repressive solutions to (the will be) violators. For this reason, various stakeholders of the traffic law must be able to synchronize their tasks and functions.
