Abstract

Envy is one of psychological disorder which could cause various negative impacts such as slander, quarrel and even assassination. Raja Ali Haji specially emphasized this matter theoretically in the last chapter of Thamarat al-Muhimmah (Mirror for Rulers Works) while numerous of real-life examples pertaining to the envy elements based on historical events appeared in Tuhfat al-Nafis (Historical Works). Thus, this article endeavours to analyse Raja Ali Haji’s thought regarding envy based on his afore mentioned two works. This is qualitative research, which applies library research method to collect data and textual analysis method with inductive approach to analyse the data. The finding indicates a holistic picture of envy in accordance to Raja Ali Haji’s view encompassed the definition, retribution, historical illustration and the cure for this disease. According to him, the envy is one of human internal disposition crisis, which orientates towards tyranny. The delineation of the envy element by Raja Ali Haji in both of his works depicts his exertion to produce a good man by liberating from the disorder. Its significance for oneself to liberate from this tyranny orientated disorder due to its impact which may triggering negative consequences in world and hereafter.
