Abstract

New Media or also known as cyber media is the latest development in information and communication technology. The presence of cyber media has changed how information and news are accessed by people. Before the birth of cyber media, people accessed information through mass media, such as newspapers, radio or television. Nowadays, people do not rely on those mass media to access news and information anymore. People prefer to access information through cyber media because of its interactive feature, allowing people to be a part of distribution and production system in cyber media. Related to the aforementioned point, the present research uses qualitative method to investigate the comprehension of college students toward cyber media. The present research uses in-depth interviews to obtain data from respondents. The findings indicate that the respondents are active audiences of cyber media. By being active audiences, respondents belong to the dominant and negotiation position toward understanding of cyber media. Most of respondents’ receptions toward the advantage of cyber media are in dominant position. On the other hand, most respondents belong to negotiation position whereas only one respondent take dominant position in the effect of cyber media. Keywords : reception, cyber media, audience
