Abstract
An attempt was made to replicate Schlegel's finding that pelvic shape relates to masculinity - femininity of personality and marital stability. Seventy pregnant women completed scales of masculinity, feminism and sexual satisfaction before a gynaecological examination in which the width of their pelvic outlet was measured by external calipers. Although pelvic shape was not significantly related to either masculinity or feminism in their own right, quadrant analysis revealed that feminine/nonfeminist women were both wider in pelvic outlet and more sexually satisfied than other women. This was interpreted as weak support for the theory that pelvic shape and behavioural sex roles are jointly determined by sex hormones circulating during foetal development.
