Abstract

This chapter focuses on PEGASUS, an example of an autocoded program for sales analysis and forecasting. It discusses how easily an electronic computer can be used for commercial data processing. It presents the use of a computer for an important and frequently required administrative process and explains how a computer is made to tackle such work. The computer used was a Ferranti PEGASUS computer. This has been achieved by exploiting a new technique called Autocode. The Autocode provides a simple means of presenting work to the computer; it is a form of computer shorthand which can be read directly by anyone, and with which it is possible to learn to write in a day or two without previous computer experience.
