Abstract
The field of oral and maxillofacial surgery has made a concerted effort to promote responsible opioid prescribing for postoperative pain control. A 2020 white paper from the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) highlights some of these efforts, which includes supporting the mandatory usage of prescription drug monitoring programs, promoting continuing education courses, and developing evidence-based prescription guidelines.1 However, the job is not finished, as the opioid epidemic remains a public health challenge in the United States.
