Abstract

A built-up edge repeatedly forms on the rake face of a cutting tool and then peels away during the machining of a carbon steel. The mode of peeling of the built-up edge from the rake face and its effect on tool life during the machining of free cutting steels was investigated. It was found that the peeling mode changes with the composition of free cutting steels and greatly affects tool life.
