Abstract

Oral care for deaf and blind children provides a real challenge to the dentist. The technical aspects of treatment do not differ greatly from those provided for nonhandicapped patients. An understanding of the psychologic problems within the child, which occur as a result of the handicapping condition, is essential for successful management. The mental conditions of blind and deaf children have been described, along with suggestions for management of such children based on their psychologic complications. Children often experience multiple handicaps– blindness and deafness which occur in association with other conditions. Such patients frequently are institutionalized. Suggestions for their management in the dental chair have been presented. The successful management of handicapped children fulfills a responsibility of the dental profession.
