Abstract

The initial assessment of pediatric upper abdominal masses often presents complex diagnostic considerations, from benign etiologies to life-threatening malignancies. Prompt diagnosis and optimal management is important for improving outcomes and imaging plays a paramount role in diagnosis. This article discusses current multimodality imaging approaches, including radiography, ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and nuclear medicine studies for evaluating pediatric upper abdominal masses with emphasis on malignant masses. Each modality offers distinct advantages and limitations; however, when utilized appropriately they collectively help achieve a timely and accurate diagnosis of pediatric upper abdominal masses, which, in turn, can lead to optimal pediatric patient care.
