Abstract

This text, written by a group of internationally known pediatric thyroid specialists, is a book that has been sorely needed; it will serve as an excellent reference for any physician caring for infants, children, adolescents, or young adults. There are a total of 13 chapters; the first chapter discusses thyroid gland development and normal thyroid physiology; it serves as a nice review before subsequent chapters deal with more specific areas, such as thyroid testing, screening procedures, autoimmunity, tumors. The chapters discussing "Assessment of Thyroid Function," "Thyroid Cancer," "Low T<sup>3</sup>Syndrome," and "Thyroid Dysfunction in the Premature Infant" are particularly well done, and clearly present information that often to this reviewer seemed contradictory and confusing. In addition to the above chapters specifically mentioned, there are chapters concerning hypothyroidism, hyperthyroid (including neonatal), thyroiditis, and goiter; all are well written.
