Abstract

Pediatric extraesophageal reflux (PEER) has become an increasingly recognized problem by otolaryngologists managing the care of children with upper aerodigestive diseases. Clinical and basic science research has shown a strong association between PEER and laryngeal disorders, tracheobronchial diseases, swallowing disorders, sinus disease, and eustachian tube dysfunction. This miniseminar will help the attendee: (1) become more familiar with the prevalence of PEER; (2) identify the many extraesophageal manifestations of PEER; (3) discover the various diagnostic testing modalities available for the evaluation of gastroesophageal and extraesophageal reflux; and (4) learn which treatment method will be most effective at minimizing the effects of PEER. A multidisciplinary panel, composed of otolaryngologists, a pediatric pulmonologist, and a pediatric gastroenterologist, will present an overview of contemporary diagnostic and treatment approaches available to the practicing otolaryngologist.
