Abstract
The Philippines is an archipelago consisting of more than 7,000 islands. Most of the pediatric ophthalmology activity is centered in Metropolitan Manila in Luzon. There are less than 20 pediatric ophthalmologists catering to the needs of 28 million children from a population base of 81 million. The palpable lack of specialists is filled by pediatric-inclined general ophthalmologists and by colleagues in vitreoretinal surgery for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). There is a scattering of professors in pediatric ophthalmology, but no one has a practice geared solely for the subspecialty.
