Abstract

There is a substantial increase in emergency department (ED) visits and hospitalizations for youth experiencing mental health crises, which has worsened with COVID-19. Youth requiring inpatient mental health treatment often stay in the ED or are admitted to an inpatient medical unit while waiting for placement as a psychiatric inpatient; this practice is referred to as “boarding.” The participants of this Clinical Perspectives will learn about challenges related to the pediatric mental health boarding crisis and opportunities to develop clinical interventions and programs by innovative, collaborative, and multidisciplinary approaches.
