Abstract
This second edition is another entry in the burgeoning area of textbooks addressing topics of the intensive care unit. It bears little similarity to the first edition, being markedly better (and larger) in all respects. The text is generally well written and covers most subjects in adequate detail for pediatric house officers and practitioners. Its 50 chapters have many excellent features. Most of the pulmonary section is superb. Roentgenographic evaluation of respiratory problems is dealt with nicely in numerous chapters. Several short chapters detail specific entities such as pneumothorax and pleural effusion. These are useful and well-written chapters that provide much valuable information to the bedside clinician. However, some areas are covered only superficially. The chapter on Reye's syndrome is six pages long; it has numerous typographical errors and covers the topic inadequately. Poisoning and drug ingestion also are covered weakly—tricyclic antidepressants and aspirin intoxication are not mentioned, for instance.
