Abstract

While one must admire the diligence and dedication which enabled the author to spend "six years of laborious reading, study, and writing" in the preparation of this book, it is difficult to evaluate its usefulness. It can only be suggested that if a practitioner feels the need of another "index," similar to The Compleat Pediatrician, and believes that this sort of compilation actually facilitates the clinical management of patients, this book deserves to be examined. If he is faced with an infant with diarrhea, termed enteritis in the Index, he will be advised to rule out mononucleosis, brucellosis, influenza, virus disease, food poisoning, various types of arthritis, meningitis, food intolerance, etc.! Treatments listed range from mild sedation and restriction of diet through a list of antibiotics which have been recommended for the treatment of diarrhea extending from the sulfonamides to Synnematin B®.
