Abstract

A mass gathering or special event (MGSE) is defined as a planned and organized activity of more than 1000 persons. Nurses are frequently called upon to help provide health care at MGSEs, such as celebrations, sporting events, summer athletic programs, or concerts. MGSEs can present special health care challenges if a large number of children and adolescents attend and become ill or injured. Unfortunately, MGSEs always have the potential to deteriorate into a mass casualty event (MCE) or terrorist incident. Health care providers who plan for pediatric care at mass gatherings can improve disaster preparedness and enhance the working relationships among pediatric and adult emergency care providers and poison control professionals. The purpose of this article is to describe the important factors that affect pediatric health care at a MGSE.
