Abstract

This chapter presents a design-build studio that applied edit, a methodology involving: engagement, design, implementation and transformation. The studio proposed a vertical transdisciplinary studio composed of graduate students in interior architecture (IA) and undergraduate students in industrial design (ID) and involved the participatory collaboration of underrepresented youth in the community as a component of the design process. The latter had two intentions: (1) to develop empathy and social agency in design students, and (2) to expose underserved youth to design, under the hypothesis that collaboration across multiple audiences will improve creativity. The chapter highlights “cumulus,” a process inspired collaboration conducted with a group of ten graduate students in IA, 34 undergraduate students in ID, and 120 sixth graders from a local (Arizona) Title I K-8 school. It describes the contexts and development of this participatory funded studio piloted at Arizona State University and it reflects on the cross-disciplinary collaborations with multiple audiences.
