Abstract

A non-linear equation for the stream function of flows, which describes the barotropic circulation in narrow straits, is considered. Possible particular cases of this equation which permit us to obtain analytical solutions are analysed. The contribution of various factors to the formation of peculiarities of the streamline distribution is estimated. The paramount importance of bottom friction and the influence of bottom topography in a general balance of forces are indicated using the Bosphorus as an example. The analytical solutions obtained are recommended for the description of the kinematic structure of waters in narrow straits.
