Abstract

The purpose of this article is to consider, by using the method of descriptive poetics, the features of revealing the image of an exceptional character in K. Gere's Timeless trilogy, which are closely related to the problem of growing up and becoming the personality of the main character Gwendolyn Shepherd. Endowing the latter with the ability to carry out the so-called jumps into the past, K. Gere not only recreates the realities of past eras, but also subjects the process of moral transformation of Gwendoline Shepherd to artistic comprehension. The fact that the latter has a unique gift, her encounter with a number of unusual circumstances contributes to the formation of an aura of exclusivity in the minds of her readers, which indicates the use by the German writer in the analyzed trilogy of the artistic principles of romanticism. At the same time, K. Gere endows his heroine with the features of a typical English teenager of the 2010s with rather stereotyped and stereotyped ideas about the peculiarities of life of people of the past centuries. However, it is through the representation of the point of view of Gwendoline Shepherd that the interaction of different time planes and people of different eras is recreated in the novels of the trilogy. The realization of the fantastic beginning in the texts under consideration, the correlation of the categories of the real and the unreal is carried out through the use by the writer of such an artistic detail as a chronograph. The solution to the question of how to use the device that allows you to move in time becomes for Gwendolyn Shepherd a kind of exam for morality and humanity. Emphasizing by the writer of such qualities of the central character as the rejection of selfish interests, the desire to show mercy and do good deeds reinforce the didactic pathos of the novels of the trilogy and emphasize their main idea - to avoid blind faith in the fatalistic predestination of events and to cultivate in oneself the spirit of struggle with adverse life circumstances.
