Abstract
Urban population living in Astana aged 40 and above has been examined to study osteoporosis rate and its relationship with nutrition practice within the framework of the State Program for Public Health Development of Kazakhstan for 2011–2015 “Salamatty Kazakhstan” (“Healthy Kazakhstan”). Ultrasound densitometry method was used to detect changes associated with bone density. Population of Astana over 40 years old was examined using 24 hours recall to estimate the dietary intake indicating the weight of all consumed per day of food products, 100 questionnaires were studied. Data on family composition, ethnicity, occupational, age, and etc have been studied to ensure the representativeness of the sample by using the questionnaire. The analysis of dietary intake was found that the average caloric was about 1770 kcal, primarily at the expense of animal protein and carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are reimbursed in 73% of respondents mainly due to the “fast” carbohydrates. The content of dietary fiber in average was around 18 g, while at the recommended rate for the elderly should be not less than 30 – 35 g fiber per day. There was a vitamin and mineral deficiency in the elderly in 39.8% of cases, and the rest of their content was within normal limits.
